October brings in cooler weather which means it is time to winterize your grass. Fertilizing, spreading a preemergent, and top dressing your turfgrass are three key things to do that will benefit your turfgrass over the coming winter months. When choosing your fertilizer make sure the Phosphorous and Potassium are higher than your Nitrogen (most products will have the word “winterizer” on the bag). Feeding your turf Phosphorous and Potassium will help to strengthen the root system and will provide disease resistance. Next spread your pre-emergent, which will target broad leaf weed seeds from germinating once the air and soil temperatures drop to the desired range. The final step is to apply a ¼” to ½” layer of compost or a compost-enriched soil to your turf. This will give the soil a boost of organic matter that improves the moisture-holding capacity of the soil, adds nutrients, and feeds soil microbes. These microbes are key to the complex process that makes food available to grass plants. A healthy microbe population encourages a dense green lawn.
