Casco Organics is part of the Casco family of companies, a family-owned, multi-generational Houston business. Casco had been taking in Houston green waste for decades: the raw trees, shrubs, and small plants removed for land clearing. Metals, aggregates, and paper already had recycling outlets. Green waste did not. Casco Organics was set up to grind, age, and blend it instead of burying it.
Mission
Our mission is to interrupt the cycle by which nutrient-rich green waste is buried in a landfill. By saving and redirecting this green waste, we produce mulches and soil blends from natural, locally sourced feedstock.
Honesty, quality, transparency and integrity are the words we use for how we work.
The property
Everything is made on one property in south Houston. The wood comes off land-clearing and tree work around the city. The manure is horse manure from stables around Houston plus rodeo manure. The food waste is brought to the yard by food waste collection companies.
The yard itself was dug out as a sand pit. One of the old pits was never backfilled, so it fills from rainfall and recharges on its own. Water seeps in slowly from a stand of trees along the edge of the yard. That pond is what we pump from to water the piles through the drier months, so the yard supplies its own water. Since the compost piles went in around it, runoff has put more life into the pond, and that water helps the piles break down when it goes back on them. Casco still digs sand on this property, and that sand is what Screened Bank Sand and the soil blends are built from.
The counter
James and Scott run the retail counter. James has been with Casco Organics since the beginning and Scott joined about a year ago.
