Soil blends in Houston

Topsoil has no standard definition. Technically it is whatever soil is on the surface, which is why fill dirt with clay chunks, rock, and weed seed gets sold under the name. You can amend pH and add nutrients after the fact. Texture you cannot change once the soil is spread and graded.

Our blends start from Casco Compost, humus, and sand we dig and screen here, so we can list what is in a yard. Garden Mix is Casco Compost, humus, and sand, largest share first, and it works in the ground or in a container. Lawn Mix is loamy sand, Casco Compost, and humus, and it is the heaviest blend we make, for seed, sod, and topdressing. Tree & Shrub Mix is sandy loam topsoil, Casco Compost, and humus, built to give shrubs and new trees stability and a root system into the ground.

Screened Sandy Loam Topsoil is not a blend. It is straight topsoil dug from this property and screened to half-inch minus so the clay and rock come out. A lab classified it as a sandy loam, which is where the name comes from. The three blends all carry Casco Compost, made here from wood shavings, animal manure, and food waste and held for months.

Raw dirt comes with clay chunks, rocks, and clumps. Texture is the one thing you cannot fix after it is spread. Half-inch minus means anything larger is caught and set aside.
