Compost in Houston

Casco Compost is wood shavings, animal manure, and food waste, composted here and screened to half-inch minus. The manure is horse manure from stables around Houston plus rodeo manure. The food waste is fruit, vegetable, meat, and dairy from food waste collection companies. Meat and dairy move a Texas operation out of the exempt tier, so we filed the TCEQ notification before we started taking them and we are registered with TCEQ under the notification tier.

It is made in small batches. Large producers take in so much feedstock that windrows have to be turned and pushed off the pad to make room for the next load. We cook ours out in the windrows, move it to static curing piles, and let it finish before it is used.

Everything in it is material that would otherwise be thrown away. Wood shavings, stable and rodeo manure, and food waste brought in by collection companies come into the yard, and they leave as compost.

Common questions

Yes. Casco Compost is made at our Houston yard from wood shavings, animal manure, and food waste brought in by collection companies. We compost it in windrows, cure it in static piles, and screen it to half-inch minus.

Finished compost smells like earth. A sour, vinegar, ammonia, or sulfur smell means it is still fermenting. Product that is hot at the point of sale is still composting. We do not go on smell alone. Every section of Casco Compost gets a Solvita test before it is pulled. We hold material for months, and some of it for years.
