The state windrow minimum is 15 days at 131 F with five turnings. We hold material for months, and some of it for years.
Piles stay aerobic. We water them during dry stretches.
Finished product runs through a trommel. Oversize comes out of mulch, compost, and blends. Clay chunks come out of the sand.

Smell it. Finished mulch and compost smell like earth. A sour, vinegar, ammonia, or sulfur smell means it was sold too young. Nothing leaves our yard until it passes that test.
