The material

What it is

Cedar Mulch is 100% natural Texas cedar. It has a reddish-brown color that comes from the wood itself, not from dye.

Cedar is known for its natural insect-repellent properties, which help protect the plants in a mulched bed. It also retains soil moisture, reduces weed growth, and helps regulate soil temperature. As it breaks down, it adds organic matter back to the soil.

It is sold as is, in the cedar's own color, with no colorant on it.

What to know

Where it comes from

Cedar Mulch is one of the few products we do not make. We buy it in finished from suppliers in Central Texas, between San Antonio and Austin, and it arrives ready to sell. We do not grind or process it here.

We stock it alongside the mulch and soil we do make, and the yard loads it by the cubic yard the same as anything else.

Uses

Best for

  • Garden beds and landscape beds where a natural reddish color is wanted
  • Areas where insect pressure is a concern (cedar's natural repellent character)
  • Around trees and shrubs
  • Moisture retention, so beds need less frequent watering
  • Weed control, which cuts down on maintenance

Good to know

What to check before you buy any mulch

Mulch sold before it is finished is the common problem in this category. Piled too high and never turned, it goes anaerobic and ferments, and university research documents the result: a vinegar, ammonia, or sulfur smell, and plants that wilt or bleach after application. Our Aged Native Mulch page explains what sour mulch is and how to spot it.

Mulch is not a pesticide, so treat cedar's insect-repellent character as a helpful property rather than pest control.
