Sand in Houston

Bank sand is mined sand used for fill, drainage, and raising low areas. Grass grows well in it, which is why it is a common base before soil or turf.

We dig this sand ourselves. The production yard was a sand pit, and Casco still digs sand on this property. Raw bank sand comes out of the pit with clay mixed through it. We run ours through a trommel and the clay chunks come out and go on a pile of their own, so the load you get spreads without stopping to pull chunks out, and it grades level.

Three sands come off this yard and their names are easy to confuse. In soil naming the second word is the main component and the first word describes it, so loamy sand is sand with a lot of loam in it and sandy loam is more loam than sand. Bank sand is straight fill and it is the only one of the three we sell on its own as sand. Our own loamy sand is the lighter soil sand and it is the base of Lawn Mix. Sandy loam is the darker-brown traditional topsoil: we sell it on its own as Screened Sandy Loam Topsoil, and it is the base of Tree & Shrub Mix.

Common questions

Screened Bank Sand is the sand we sell as its own product. Our loamy sand is the base of Lawn Mix. Sandy loam we sell as Screened Sandy Loam Topsoil and use as the base of Tree & Shrub Mix.

Screening pulls clay chunks and oversize debris. Unscreened fill still has those chunks in it, so it spreads unevenly.
